Once search engines can reach and index your pages (the technical roots), the next audit is on-page: the structure and content that decide whether a reachable page is actually understood and worth ranking. This is your site's trunk — and unlike rankings, it's entirely a checklist you control. Here's an on-page SEO audit checklist to run page by page.

Pair it with the technical SEO audit checklist for the full foundation.

1. The H1 — one clear main heading

  • Exactly one H1 per page.
  • It describes the page's subject the way a customer would search.
  • Not vague ("Welcome") or brand-only — it names the actual topic.

2. Heading structure — a logical outline

  • Headings form a sensible hierarchy (no skipping H1 → H4).
  • If you read only the headings, they summarize the page.
  • Headings used for structure, not just visual size.

3. Title tag & meta description — your search-result pitch

  • A title that leads with what the searcher wants and isn't truncated.
  • A description that sets accurate expectations (no overpromising).
  • Each page's title/description is unique, not duplicated across pages.
  • The page is linked to from relevant other pages (not an orphan).
  • It links out to related pages with descriptive anchor text.
  • Important pages are well-linked, not buried. (See internal linking for SEO.)

5. Content — answers the intent

  • The page satisfies the search intent, not just mentions the keyword.
  • Depth matches the question — thorough without padding.
  • It's genuinely useful enough that a reader doesn't bounce back to search.

6. Page-type fit

  • The page has what its type needs — a product page needs different things than an about page. See the page-type checklists for the specifics.

Audit every page without doing it by hand

Running this on one page is easy; running it consistently across a whole site is where it breaks down. CommandSEO performs this on-page audit for every page, flags what's missing by severity, drafts the fix, and verifies it shipped. See how it works or the deeper on-page structure piece.

On-page SEO is a checklist, not a gamble. Give every page a clear H1, a logical structure, real internal links, and content that answers the question — and reachable pages become rankable ones.
