The Google ranking factors that actually matter

Search "Google ranking factors" and you'll find lists of 200 things, ranked by importance, as if SEO were a checklist you grind through. The reality is simpler and more useful: a handful of factors do most of the work, they cluster into a few categories, and some you control completely while others you barely influence. Knowing the difference is what lets you spend your effort well.

This pairs with how to rank higher on Google — there's the how-to; here's the why.

The categories that matter

Rather than memorizing a long list, think in layers — the same layers that decide whether a page is Search-Ready:

  1. Can it be found and indexed? (Crawlability and indexation.) The most fundamental factor, and the most overlooked. A page that can't be crawled or is accidentally noindexed has zero ranking ability — this factor gates all the others.
  2. Does it match intent? Google strongly rewards pages that answer what the searcher actually wants, not just pages that contain the keyword.
  3. Is it well-structured on-page? A clear H1, logical headings, a title that earns the click, and internal links so the page isn't stranded.
  4. Is it credible? Authority (including links) and E-E-A-T — experience, expertise, authoritativeness, trust — especially for pages giving advice.
  5. Is the experience sound? Reasonable speed and a page that works on mobile.

What you control vs. what you don't

  • Fully in your control: crawlability, indexation, on-page structure, internal linking, content quality, schema. This is the foundation — and it's where the highest-return work is.
  • Influenced over time: authority and backlinks. You earn these; you can't flip a switch.
  • Outside your control: the competition, the searcher's intent, Google's algorithm changes.

The lesson: pour your energy into the factors you control. They're the foundation, and they're what make the rest worth pursuing — the case we make in Roots before lights.

The "200 factors" myth

Yes, Google uses many signals. No, you shouldn't try to optimize 200 things. Most of those signals are minor, automated, or downstream of the basics. Nail crawlability, intent, on-page structure, and genuine quality, and you've addressed the factors that move rankings. The rest is rounding error for most sites.

Focus on the factors that move the needle

The fastest way to act on ranking factors is to find where your site fails the ones that matter — the un-indexable pages, the missing H1s, the orphaned content — and fix those first. CommandSEO analyzes your site against these foundational factors, flags issues by severity, and verifies fixes on the live page. See what it checks or browse the glossary to learn each factor in plain English.

Don't chase 200 ranking factors. Master the handful you control, and you've done more than most sites ever will.
