ChatGPT is genuinely useful for keyword research — not as a replacement for real search data, but as a fast assistant for the thinking around it: brainstorming angles, clustering related terms, and turning a keyword into an outline. Used well, AI keyword research saves hours. Used naively, it invents search volumes that don't exist. Here's how to get the upside without the trap.

This builds on how to do keyword research — start there for the fundamentals, then add AI on top.

What ChatGPT is good at

  • Expanding a seed topic. "List the questions a small business owner asks before hiring a plumber" surfaces angles and phrasings you'd miss.
  • Clustering keywords by intent. Paste a messy list and ask it to group terms by what the searcher wants — informational, commercial, navigational.
  • Drafting outlines. Turn a target keyword into a logical heading structure that matches intent.
  • Finding the language gap. Ask how customers describe a problem vs. how a business describes its solution — that gap is often where easy keywords live.

Prompts that work

  • "Group these keywords by search intent and suggest one page per cluster: [list]."
  • "What questions would someone ask before [your service]? Phrase them as searches."
  • "Turn the keyword '[keyword]' into an H1 and a heading outline that fully answers the intent."

Where AI keyword research falls short

Be clear-eyed about the limits:

  • It doesn't know real search volume. If ChatGPT gives you numbers, treat them as fiction unless they come from an actual data source. AI is for ideas and structure, not metrics.
  • It can hallucinate. Verify keywords against real signals — Google autocomplete, "People also ask", or your own Search Console.
  • It doesn't know your site. It can't tell you which of your pages should target a keyword, or whether that page is even Search-Ready.

The step AI can't do for you

AI can hand you a perfect keyword and outline — but if the page targeting it can't be crawled, indexed, or clearly understood, it won't rank. The keyword is only as good as the foundation underneath the page. That's the part CommandSEO handles: it connects real demand to the right page via Keyword Opportunities, and makes sure that page's foundation is sound. Curious where AI tools fit overall? Use ChatGPT to think faster about keywords, not to invent data. Then put each keyword on a page that's actually built to rank.
