If your customers are nearby — a clinic, a trades business, a café, a local service — then "near me" searches are some of the most valuable traffic you can win. Local SEO is how you show up for them. But like all SEO, it works best on a solid foundation: a beautiful local listing won't save a site search engines can't crawl or understand.

This is the local layer that sits on top of the small-business SEO foundation.

What's different about local SEO

Most SEO is about ranking a page for a query. Local SEO adds a second surface: the local pack — the map and the three business listings Google shows for local intent. Ranking there depends on signals you largely control:

  • A complete Google Business Profile — accurate category, hours, photos, services.
  • Consistent NAP — your business Name, Address, and Phone matching exactly across your site and listings. Drift quietly costs you visibility.
  • LocalBusiness schema on your contact and location pages, so search engines understand your entity and service area.
  • Genuine local content — a real page per service and per area you serve, not one thin "areas we serve" list.

The local SEO checklist

  1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile. Fill every field; keep it accurate.
  2. Make your NAP identical everywhere. Same format on your site footer, contact page, and every listing.
  3. Add LocalBusiness schema to your contact and location pages (contact page checklist, location page checklist).
  4. Build a real page per service and per area you genuinely serve — each with a clear H1 naming the service and place.
  5. Earn reviews and respond to them — they feed both trust and the local pack.
  6. Keep the foundation sound. None of the above ranks if the underlying pages aren't crawlable, indexable, and well-structured.

Don't skip the foundation for the listing

It's tempting to pour all your energy into the Google Business Profile and ignore the website. But the two reinforce each other: a strong, crawlable site with consistent details and LocalBusiness schema makes your local listing more credible, and vice versa. Foundation first, then local signals — that's the order that compounds. (More on the sequence in Roots before lights.)

What CommandSEO checks for local

The weights aren't a guess. In Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey, proximity is the biggest factor at roughly 55% (and outside your control), followed by Google Business Profile signals at about 32% and reviews at 16 to 20% and rising. So the audit focuses on what you actually control:

  • Your Google Business Profile. CommandSEO reads it the way the local pack does, category, claimed status, hours, photos, rating, and review count, and flags the real gaps: an unclaimed profile, a missing primary category, thin reviews next to competitors. GBP is your own asset, so this is one place the tool names the source and tells you plainly to go complete it.
  • Whether you win the pack. It checks the "service + city" search to see if you appear in the local pack and where, so a strong profile that still isn't showing points you at the real gap (proximity, category, or reviews).
  • NAP and schema on your pages. Inconsistent or missing name/address/phone, and missing LocalBusiness schema on a location or contact page, surface as fixable findings, then it verifies the fix is live.

And once a location page is written, you can run it through the anti-slop enrichment editor to make sure the content itself is specific and citable, not a thin "areas we serve" list an answer engine ignores.

Make it manageable

Keeping NAP consistent, schema correct, and every service/area page sound across a small site is more fiddly than hard — exactly the kind of thing that's easy to let slip. CommandSEO flags these foundation issues on your pages and verifies fixes are live, so your local SEO is built on something solid. See for site owners for how that looks without an agency.

Local SEO wins on signals you control — but only when the site underneath them is sound. Build the foundation, then claim your corner of the map.
