Before you can improve your rankings, you need to know where you actually stand — and you don't need an expensive rank tracker to find out. There are free, accurate ways to check your Google rankings, and (more importantly) to turn what you learn into the next fix. Here's how.

The free ways to check your rankings

  • Google Search Console (the best one). It shows the real average position, impressions, and clicks for every query your site appears for — straight from Google. This is more trustworthy than any third-party estimate, and it's free. (CommandSEO surfaces this as Search Visibility when you connect it.)
  • An incognito search. Open a private window (to reduce personalization) and search your target term. Useful for a quick spot check, less reliable than Search Console.
  • Avoid the temptation to obsess. Rankings fluctuate daily and vary by location and device. Look at the trend over weeks, not the position on any given morning.

What the numbers actually tell you

Don't just read the rank — read the opportunity:

  • High impressions, low clicks? You're ranking but not earning the click — usually a title tag problem.
  • Ranking on page 2 (positions 11–20)? These are your best opportunities — small improvements can push them onto page 1.
  • Appearing for queries you didn't target? A signal to build or strengthen a page for that intent.
  • Not appearing at all for an important term? Often a foundation problem — the page may not be indexable (see Crawlability and indexation).

Turn rankings into action

Checking rankings is only useful if it changes what you do next. The pattern:

  1. Find pages ranking just off page 1 → improve their on-page structure and intent match.
  2. Find high-impression, low-click pages → rewrite the title and meta.
  3. Find missing pages → that's a content or foundation gap to fill.

This is the loop that grows traffic (how to increase website traffic).

From numbers to next steps, automatically

The hard part isn't checking rankings — it's knowing which fix each number points to. CommandSEO reads your Search Console data alongside your site's foundation and turns it into prioritized, plain-English actions, then verifies each fix is live. See how it works.

Checking your rankings is free with Search Console. The value isn't the number — it's the fix the number points to.
